I'm Listening: Tegan and Sara on Expressing Pain and Finding Help

The twin rock stars continue fighting for the LGBTQ community with their foundation

September 4, 2019

Tegan and Sara will be a part of I’m Listening on Sunday September 8, as all Entercom radio stations across the country will mark the start of National Suicide Prevention Week with a special two-hour commercial-free broadcast dedicated to ending the stigma of talking about mental health.

“You can’t have those things happen to you and not talk about it, and not physically or mentally have something manifest itself,” Sara explains in a preview of their appearance above. “It makes sense to me now, if I don’t talk about my feelings I’m not gonna feel well. I’m not gonna be well.”

The twin rock star sisters from Canada have been fighting for the health and representation of girls and women in the LGBTQ community for years with their Tegan and Sara Foundation, and are dedicated to using their own experience to help others.

“When we’re talking about queer people and how to get queer people having success in their lives, I don’t think that you can ignore the mental health and the physical health of a queer person and still have them be successful,” adds Sara. “In talking about our experiences as young queer people who didn’t yet know how to talk about being queer, I know that my path through alcohol and drugs and high-risk behavior was a way of sort of screaming out,  ‘I need to talk about my anxiety.’ We need a way to express the pain and the trauma that we’re feeling.”

“If we talk about it we might be able to manage or deal with those things in different ways, more positive ways.”

Adults in the LGBTQ community are more than twice as likely as heterosexuals to have mental health conditions. The numbers are even more staggering for those in high school that identify as LGBTQ. It’s the work of the Tegan and Sara Foundation and I’m Listening to give these people a voice and to end the stigma of talking about mental health.

At 7 AM local time on your favorite RADIO.COM station, you can call-in live and join artists like Tegan and Sara, athletes, and medical professionals for an in-depth conversation about mental health and suicide prevention.

Prior to Sunday’s show, please SHARE YOUR STORY on how mental health or suicide has impacted your life. Select stories will be included in the broadcast.
