After 146 Years Ringling Bros. Circus is closing Tent

January 17, 2017

If you happened to be living under a tent this weekend you might have missed that Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus is closing after 146 years of being in business.

Over the last couple years the company that has made a career out of its traveling animals and acts has decided to close up shop. It has been the subject of many animal rights protests over the last couple year. Recently Ringling Bros. settled a lawsuit with animal rights groups over their elephants but between the legal cases and declining attendance the famed Circus will call it quits.

Many people might be happy but I can't feel a little sad today. I remember being a kid and my first circus experience back in New York at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. Getting the chance to walk downstairs and see the animals before the show, then seeing the most exciting show I have ever seen. I remember walking out wanting to be a juggler and walk the tightrope when I grew up. It sparked my imagination and gave me a three hour show with my parents (that I did fight going to see at first) that I ended up loving and will always cherish as a moment we as a family got to enjoy an incredible show.

Ringling Bros. Circus will be doing some final shows in cities like New York and Philladelphia. The closest it will be coming to Hampton Roads is up in the DC Area by Fairfax. I myself think I'll be taking one more trip home to Long Island & try to see the greatest show on Earth one last time at the arena I first saw it at....Nassau Colliseum.

How do you feel after hearing the circus is closing down?
